SIX MORE WEEKS

A winter that has already brought its share of snow, cold weather and flooding will last at least another six weeks, according to Punxsutawney Phil. The world's most famous weather forecasting groundhog made his annual prediction at Gobbler's Knob shortly after 7am before a record crowd of shivering witnesses.

The groundhog, apparently spooked by a predawn fireworks display, managed to conceal himself in his burrow, almost out of the reach of his human interpreters. "My heart just stopped. I opened the door and there was no groundhog. He had burrowed down two feet below his perch," said Official Handler Bill Deeley.

Legend has it that if the groundhog sees his shadow, there will be six more weeks of winter. No shadow; spring is right around the corner. Of the 110 treks to Gobblers Knob, there have only been 12 times that the groundhog has predicted an early spring.
