One person was injured when fire broke out at the Roosevelt Arms apartments on Penn Avenue in downtown Pittsburgh on Wednesday morning. The victim was inside an apartment at the complex, and was taken to UPMC Mercy in serious condition. The fire apparently started in a sofa in a third-floor unit.

State officials have approved the first part of a plan to stabilize the site of a landslide that was to become a Wal-Mart store in Kilbuck Township. The plans for a store have been abandoned for that location, and the company is planning to create a green space that will not be further developed. A landslide at the site closed part of Route 65 for two weeks in 2006.

Police in Blair County are awaiting paternity testing while preparing to arrest a man for raping a 12-year-old girl. Police believe a 20-year-old man had sex with the girl, who gave birth earlier this year. The suspect told police he had consensual sex with the Altoona girl.

Rescue workers are continuing to search for survivors and victims of China's earthquake in the Sichuan province. Troops rushed to plug cracks that appeared in a dam, and it was later proclaimed to be safe. The earthquake reportedly damaged nearly 400 dams, prompting additional concerns.

Police in Florida have detained a "person of interest" in connection with arson fires that have been burning throughout the central portion of the state. Authorities say Brian Crowder, 30, sprinted when police attempted to confront him after a witness reported seeing someone throw a possible flamable device out a car window early in the morning. Wildfires have sent hundreds from their homes.

A former Marine has agreed to pay $11,000 to a woman who accused him of coercing her into sex during an overnight party at a recruiting station. The woman, who was 17 at the time, says Staff Sgt. Joseph Dunzweiler told her she had to have sex with him if she was going to join the Marines.

The Pirates have placed catcher Ryan Doumit on the 15-day disabled list after he injured his thumb. The team promoted Raul Chavez from their Indianapolis affiliate. Team officials weren't sure how long Doumit would be out... ...The Penguins hope to earn their first visit to the Stanley Cup finals since 1992 with a victory in Philadelphia on Thursday night. They'll drop the puck at 7:38 p.m.

Mrs. Brad Pitt casually broke the news while being interviewed about the animated film Kung Fu Panda... ...John Cleese is going through a third divorce. The actor arrived at court on Tuesday in a wheelchair due to knee surgery this week, and was ordered to pay his new ex-wife $150,000 a month.
