Bigelow Reactions Revisited

Over a week has gone since the closing of the street resting between Fifth Avenue and Forbes Avenue in Oakland: Bigelow Boulevard. In the course of several weeks, the University of Pittsburgh will be conducting extensive research on the results of these experimental actions. As you might remember, OnTV gave you an inside scoop from students and drivers both in a previous bulletin. Now that some time has passed, let's see what students and drivers have to say about Bigelow's closing:

Enamored

"I absolutely love it," a student on her way to her General Writing course remarked, "I think it's great. I'm only a freshman, [and being originally from Monroeville], I was scared to cross city streets at first. I hope they make this for real." Another student, a Philosophy major, was impressed as well. So impressed was the student that he and a friend decided to eat lunch in the middle of Bigelow, where not three weeks ago they would have been hit by oncoming traffic. "It's awesome. As long is it's not raining, I'm eating here. All's you need is a blanket to sit on. There's plenty of room to walk around me." In fact, the general consensus consisted of overwhelming approval from all of the students briefly interviewed.

Entrenched

"I can't stand it," said a commuter, on his way home to Penn Hills, "it's just plain stupid. I pay good taxes for these roads.... [I should deserve] to drive on them." Most drivers interviewed were sternly opposed to the entire experimental situation, or indifferent: "Doesn't affect me that much. Traffic seems the same to me," said another commuter.
