"This is Jacob. Please Help him. he's 6 days old. I can't keep him. I'm only 12. He's very good baby." And so goes the note that was mysteriously left behind in a cardboard box, along with a cold newborn baby during the chilly morning temperatures of Sunday, October 19th. A hospital security guard on routine patrol first spotted the brown cardboard box at 8 in the morning in a grassy area off Magee-Womens Hospital's parking lot near Craft and Forbes avenues, but didn't inspect it. An hour later, he did look inside and found "Jacob" wearing a diaper and a one-piece undershirt with snaps, wrapped in a receiving blanket and covered with a comforter. Close to the baby was an orange pacifier. The lid of the box was on the ground nearby. The baby weighed 4 pounds, 7 ounces, and was a couple of weeks short of a full term. He appeared to be well cared for, clean and well fed, according to detectives on the case. He was not, however, born in a medical facility, as shown by the fact that the umbilical cord was still attached, amongst other clues. At the time of this writing, the baby's mother has not been identified or found. Because of the cold morning temperatures (that night, the recorded low was 36 degrees), baby Jacob suffered from hypothermia, but was recovering under the care of Magee-Womens Hospital. Handwriting anaylists, after studying the note, have determined that it was probably written by a child. The structure of the letters also seem to indicate that the mother is around 12 to 15 years of age and could be feeling isolated and perhaps suicidal. At the time of this writing, the baby's mother has not been identified or found. Visit the OnTV Bulletin Archive. |
