Hailing from 11 Southwestern Pennsylvania counties on Tuesday, November 4th, voters adamantly rejected a proposed "Regional Renaissance" sales tax increase to fund new baseball and football stadiums, as well as other economic development projects.

The biggest upset came in Allegheny County (the county which would benefit most from the tax hike), where the Initiative was pounded by a 16-point margin. In the other surrounding counties, the outcome was worse, failing by ratios as big as 4 to 1.

However, the big winners -- as far as Allegheny County is concerned -- in the election appeared to be the majority of Democratic representatives, with Mayor Tom Murphy being re-elected for a second four-year term.

Other winners included Bob Colville (D-R) and Lester G. Nauhaus (D) as Allegheny County Common Pleas Court Judges; Pete DeFazio (D) as Allegheny County Sheriff; David N. Wecht (D) as Allegheny County Register of Wills; and capturing the City Council District 4 seat (and ousting the problematic Joe Cusick) -- Michael Diven (D).
