Collegiate basketball fans got a brush
with NCAA March Madness during the weekend of March 14th, when four of the games were held at the Civic Arena. Excited fans got to see a total of four match-ups:
Wisconsin vs. Texas, South Carolina vs. Coppin State, New Mexico vs. Old Dominion, and Lousville vs. Massachusetts.
Lucky attendants to the games got to see some of the hottest shooters in the tournament. Two of the top five scorers -- Antoine Brockington of Coppin State and Reggie Freeman of the Texas Longhorns -- landed 47 and 53 points, respectively. Other top scorers included Arthur Croshere of Providence (60), Jeff Capel of Duke (51), and Stacy Harris of the College of Charleston (47).
The tournament gave a big boost (the first time to be held here in Pittburgh), not only to the basketball fans, but to local businesses such as the hotels, restaurants, taverns, parking garages, and cab companies. Over the five-day period, it's been estimated that the NCAA visit raked in a cool $8 million.
Nevertheless, some basketball fans claim that they will "never come back to Pittsburgh" after their
cars were towed from the Civic Arena area. Tow trucks removed numerous cars from
private spots on Friday afternoon, angering fans who couldn't find spots in the arena's lots.
