Republican presidential candidate Bob Dole stopped by McKees Rocks for a visit last week, to ballyhoo small business tax cuts. Held at Ace Wire Spring and Form Co., the rally had Dole accompanied by Governor Ridge and Rep. Susan Molinari, R-N.Y., who serves as Dole's designated keynote speaker for August's Republican convention to be held in San Diego.

Showing His Feminine Side

Last week's Wednesday July 24th paper clip factory rally saw Dole making accusations that the Clinton administration "[assaulted] small businesses", and promising to reduce inheritance taxes for family firms. With Molinari and Gov. Ridge at his side, Dole tried to emphasize an appeal to female voters, who overwhelmingly favor President Clinton over Dole in present public opinion polls.

Despite the occasional chants of "Dole-Ridge, Dole-Ridge" from the crowd, both Gov. Ridge and Dole sidestepped questions about whether Ridge would be chosen for the second space on the Republican presidential ticket.

Dole-O-Rama

Adding to his proposal of creating an estate tax exemption for small businesses, Dole went on to say that he would offer legislation to reverse restrictions in the 1993 Supreme Court ruling in home office tax deduction. He promised to simplify the rules that determine whether a new hire is considered an employee or an independent contractor.

Flanked by a panoramic backdrop of piles and piles of "superclips," one of the main products of Ace Wire Spring and Form Co., Dole jokingly remarked, "It's probably the first time in campaign history that a candidate could say, 'I'm proud to be with you here in this clip joint.'"
