Promise Keepers

An estimated 40,000 men packed the seats of the Civic Arena on Friday, July 25 for the annual Pittsburgh Promise Keepers event. The organization's name refers to promises that it asks men to keep. They include worshipping Jesus Christ, being morally and sexually pure, taking care of their families and extending the hand of friendship to people of other races and denominations.

Bill McCartney, the leader of this Christian men's movement, is not without his own personal problematic past, and he often includes now well-known stories of all his trials and tribulations in his speaches to fellow Promise Keepers.

During his 30 years of coaching college football, he invested less effort in being a husband and father than he did in game plans.

McCartney's family problems finally exploded in a small town scandal. Kristyn, his daughter, twice gave birth out of wedlock to children fathered by football players for McCartney at the University of Colorado.

The numbers have grown since last years Promise Keepers event, and from the looks of it, still continue to be on the upswing.
