The 88th Annual NAACP convention, ironically held in the place of the Johnny Gammage
mistrials, was a moderate success
despite fears and concerns to the contrary.
President Bill Clinton took center stage and spoke to a packed audience of
journalists, NAACP members, and invited guests at downtown's David Lawrence Center, where the convention was held.
Regardless, protests were abound, albeit in small numbers, outside the building during the event.
NAACP President & CEO Kweisi Mfume
placed particular emphasis on economic development and
the lack of access to credit and capital in minority
communities. In response, the NAACP has developed the
Economic Reciprocity Initiative which seeks to create a
circular flow of income between the corporate community
and African Americans. The NAACP is distributing a
consumer choice guide and a report card which grades the
hotel and lodging industry on its record on employment,
contracting, philanthropy, advertising and marketing in
relationship to African Americans.
