Thanks to the help of the FBI and Pennsylvania State police, the six escapees from the North Side Prison were captured, without too much hoopla.
On January 14th, the alleged mastermind behind the prison escape from the State Correctional Institution
of Pittsburgh was apprehended in Texas. Thomas Berkelbaugh, 48, was taken to a
hospital in Houston after he was found wandering the streets and "acting weird."
A day later, fellow escaped convict
Carmen Carl Kelller was nabbed at approximately 5:30 p.m. in Chambers County,
Texas.
Finally, on January 20th, the remaining four escapees from the State Correctional Institution of Pittsburgh
were caught in Houston, Texas. Pennsylvania State Police notified FBI with crucial information as to the possible location
of the four suspects, Billingsley, Pontes, Heim and Conard. The men were caught after police were told that the
convicts were staying together at a local motel. The prisoners were surprised when officers
broke their door down, apparently knowing right then that the party (both literal and figurative) was over. They were arrested without incident, even though several guns
were found in the room with the men.
