Thursday, January 16th, marked Patti Burns' final day at KDKA. An anchorwoman and news reporter at the station for 22 1/2 years, Burns had thought she would work until her contract expired January 31st. However, KDKA News Director Sue McInerney decided that the 16th would be her last day. With expressed gratitude to the public and to the station, Burns waved a fond farewell to KDKA studios, ending a legacy which began with her father.
In 1974, Burns began her stint at KDKA-TV2 as a general assignment reporter and
later became the co-host of the weekly public affairs show, "Eyewitness
Magazine". As opportunities arose, her duties expanded in 1976 to include co-anchoring the Noon
news with her father, veteran newscaster Bill Burns. At the time, the two served as
the only father/daughter co-anchors in the nation.
During her 22 1/2 years working for KDKA, Patti Burns has made several noteworthy accomplishments.
The Pittsburgh Jaycees named Burns the 1980 Woman of the Year in
Communications. She has also received a Golden Quill Award for an
investigation into Allegheny County's Department of Children and Youth
Services, which consequently resulted in massive changes in the agency's operations from this
investigation. Burns has also received Associated Press and Matrix
awards for her series, "Inside China", and numerous other honors and
awards for her reporting.
