Neil Heads HomeA clean-shaven Neil O'Donnell appeared before the news media in Hempstead, N.Y. on Wednesday, February 28, to make an announcement that would disappoint many Steeler fans, and make him one of the top paid players in the NFL. O'Donnell inked a deal with the New York Jets that will earn him $5 million over the next five years.
The Steelers had offered him a $18.75 million, 5-year contract plus a $4 million signing bonus. But the higher salary and chance to play in his hometown proved to be enough to lure the Steelers' most successful quarterback since Terry Bradshaw to New York.
The Jets organization is likely to benefit from O'Donnell's signing -- they had the worst record in the NFL last season at 3-13, and their offense was rated last in the league. In an effort to turn the team around, the Jets have also signed two offensive tackles, David Williams and Jumbo Elliot.
How will O'Donnell's departure affect Pittsburgh? Reaction from fans is split. Many place the blame on him for the 27-17 loss to Dallas in the Super Bowl. Two interceptions to Dallas' Larry Brown dashed any hopes for the Steelers to make a comeback in the game's second half. Others are certain the Steelers would have never made it to the big game without his talents during the regular season.
After weeks of guessing O'Donnell's future, speculation can now focus on a replacement in the team's number one position, and whether or not the Steelers will have a strong enough offense to make an appearance in Super Bowl XXXI.
