Buck season opened with a bang on December 9 of this year, prompting many to run for cover. Numerous reports of fatalities, injuries and unsafe hunting practices filled the papers, television, and radio news. Many are asking if it is now safe to live in a rural area.

Roberta "Robin" Ferrebee, a 35 year-old mother of two, was struck and killed by a stray bullet in her Ohioville home. Beaver County Coroner Wayne Tatalovich has since ruled that the death was a homicide as a result of negligence on the part of a yet unknown hunter.
A window of a Richland township home was shattered by shotgun fire. While the residents were not home at the time of the incident, neighbors reported seeing hunters in the backyard that day. Even schools are not immune. Hunters were spotted in the woods directly behind Carson Middle School on December 9 around 11:30 in the morning. Others were seen walking through the school parking lot that same day. Students also reported hearing numerous gunshots. A van, driven by Thomas George Fordyce of West Alexander, ran off Route 40 in Buffalo Township, narrowly missing an off duty officer's vehicle. A hunter's bullet had entered the rear window of the van, killing Fordyce while he drove. |
