The morning of April 13th was a hectic one for Wes Hill, fire services coordinator for Beaver County Emergency Services, who was notified at around 10 minutes till 8 a.m. that Three Rivers, the Amtrak passenger train operating from Chicago to New York, and a Conrail freight train had derailed on separate tracks in the Conway rail yard. There were multiple injuries.

Sewickley Valley Hospital, the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and the Beaver Medical Center were put on alert, as part of Allegheny county's disaster plan.

According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the derailment consisted of "six Amtrak and four Conrail cars, some scarred by twisted metal, one barely recognizable." Two Amtrak coach trains were tipping at dangerous near 50-degree angles.

Fortunately, no serious injuries occured at the Freedom rail yard derailment -- only 21 people were reported hurt.
